About Him & Hallelujah
Obviously Him and Hallelujah are not our real names, they are my pseudonyms for us, my husband and myself, our noms de plume as it were. Him comes by his honestly. My nieces actually dubbed him ”Him” when they were little - 28 years ago. No, that can’t be right, can it? But yes it is, and it was way before Him and I were married. Actually, Him was involved with another woman at the time he and I met and started dating in 1983. My nieces called her “Her” so I had to come up with another name for me. There you have at least part of the story.

PS My Him was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease when he was in his early 50′s, he had been showing symptoms probably 4 years prior to diagnosis. He is now 65 and retired in January 2011. His Neurologist and I have always been “proud” that the disease progression has seemed slow over the years. Over the last couple years he began falling more and having trouble walking. This year, 2011, he has freezing episodes where he can’t move at all, and has started to have other adverse side effects from the medications that he has not previously experienced. We have been cutting back on the over all amount, but increasing /tweaking the frequency. So far, while difficult to keep up with, this has seemed to help. More on this scattered throughout this blog as it is a part of our life..sometimes totally consuming other times just something that happens to be there. This is mainly from Hallelujah’s perspective as wife and care giver, because Him is not into the Internet and blogging, etc.
While not intended to give advice at all, that is entirely up to the PD person and his/her Dr. Sharing our experience may help or be of interest to others somehow in similar situations.

The idea for “Him and Hallelujah” came to me one night as a way to express some spiritual thoughts (Hallelujah) with some grounding in practical reality (Him). The next day I played with some ideas, the next day I drew my first cartoon. The next day *Harvey Pekar died. I took it as a sign.
Now six months later, I saw the wordpress challenge of “A post a day” and thought “this is it” … got to get on it. I’m not promising a cartoon a day, I can’t draw that fast.
*Harvey Pekar was the underground cartoon artist who, in the late 60′s and 70′s, created “American Splendor” There was a movie made about the cartoon in 1973 I believe, and Harvey was on David Letterman, but other than that it seems he lived most of his life in obscurity, working a day job to make ends meet and to support his record album addiction.
